While traveling in Ireland, one of the most memorable events was an enchanting evening spent at Dunguaire Castle. A delightful dinner in a small upstairs banquet hall highlighted by Irish poetry and song delivered by amazing actors. The 16th century castle lies on the southwestern shore of Galway Bay near Kinvara. Built in 1520, the castle derives its name from the Dun of King Guaire, the legendary king of Connacht. The 75-foot tower and defensive wall have been restored to its former glory. In painting, I wanted the lighting to convey the atmosphere of an early evening banquet in the castle. Yes, there really were wild swans, just not exactly in that location. Artisitic license!
